Customer Reviews

The Oval-8 is better than the expesive custom splint I hadI had a boutoniere deformity injury to my pinky finger. I went to a hand orthopod who first tried to fit me with an Oval-8. She did not have the correct size. So her Occupational Therapist made a custom splint from a plastic sheet that conforms to a shape when heated. The cost of that splint was approximately $150. It was never very comfortable and I don't think it quite fit properly. I need to have the splint on for at least 6 weeks. It was not going to be a fun 6 weeks.I did some research and found the Oval-8. I ordered the 8/9/10 set of Oval-8 splints. With the custom made splint, I had an elastic gauze sleeve over the finger. I was unsure if I was going to do that with the Oval-8 or not. So it was a bit of a guess for the proper size. I think some reviewers here mentioned that they needed a larger size than the measurement they made. I think that is a pretty safe assumption. After I got the 3 splints, I decided not to use the sleeve. Luckily, one of the splints seems to fit just fine. I assume that it is OK to make the swap since the orthopod was trying to fit me with an Oval-8. It is SO much more comfortable than the custom splint. I buddy tape it to my ring finger to minimize 'jamming' that finger when I work with that hand.It was well worth the $21. Be advised though that the seller has a very strict return policy and if you order the wrong size, I doubt that you can return them. 5BrilliantWho knew such a simple plastic loop would work. I've been using elastic sleeves for my little finger. My finger wobbles like those toy donkeys strung by elastic bands. You push up on the base and the donkey collapses.. you know. :)This gadget keeps my wayward pinki finger from flexing backward when I hit the shift key.Genius I tell you!Enjoy the photos. 5Really works.Used for Mallet Finger. Had a custom splint for the first 8 weeks, then discovered these Oval-8s. They are very light weight and discrete. I measured my finger and it was exactly a size 6, by the measurement chart for this product. But since other reviewers said it runs small, I ordered the package that contains sizes 6, 7, & 8. Initially, the size 7 was most comfortable. Then as swelling went down, I went down to the size 6. However, my swelling has also gone up, and I ve gone back up to the larger sizes. Recommend a multi-sized package. Also recommend an online search for the Mallet Finger splint weaning schedule published online by John Hopkins Medecine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Hand Division. It was as really helpful in combination with the Oval-8 splint. In photo, wearing size 8 - swelling up again. Last photo taken 15 months after injury. Swelling took a very long time to completely go away. Patience and exercises (found online) are critical as there is no quick fix, but using the splints as directed and absolutely NO bending that joint until the healing is complete is essential. I have full use of the finger now and no ongoing pain, and every month I notice that it is still getting straighter and gaining its original shape more and more. 15 months and counting. 5I wish I didn't wait so long to order these! My last two fingers on my right hand started to ache a few months ago. I assumed it was arthritis. The pain was getting worse, almost unbearable at times. I thought because I was gripping my cane so tightly I did something to injure it. Then my knuckles started cracking and popping when I bent my hand. My last two fingers started "locking" when doing things like trying to open a jar or chop vegetables, even grip my coffee cup. I started to feel like the hand was so weak, and I was having trouble doing everyday chores, even brushing my teeth was becoming a challenge. I started googling my symptoms (I did see my primary care dr., and I told her about my hand but she didn't seem concerned. I have an HMO, so I need her to refer me to a specialist, hence the googling!) and decided I have trigger finger in those two fingers. I was taking so much Advil and ordering gloves, which helped my arthritis, but not these two fingers. Anyway, I saw these splints about a month ago. I put them in my cart and saved for later. They seem outrageously expensive and looked like tiny pieces of crap in the picture. Well, my fingers were getting worse, I was almost crying from the pain by the end of the day and felt like I was going to,start dropping things because of how weak my fingers were getting. I decided out of desperation to order these. They came, I put them on and within about an hour I started getting relief. I was in shock. I've only been using them a few days, but they are a miracle! Yesterday I spent so much time in the kitchen, I was chopping and sling and dicing, no problem. By the end of the day when I took them off, my fingers were slightly achy and stiff, but I can bend them, grip things, I can not believe how great these work! The best part is, I put them on in the morning and never take them off. Unlike the compression gloves, these can stay on when I'm washing my hands, cooking, cleaning, etc, so I am not taking them off 50 times a day. I hope anyone who buys these because of my review gets as much relief as I did, they have been amazing for me! 5Great product - But Sizing Options Need WorkI got this product for my left index finger which is twisting away from my thumb & where my PIP joint has been causing me pain. Ive been having daily inflammatory joint pains/basically rheumatoid arthritis, for nearly 2 years now & this finger has been the biggest issue. Before buying the product I measured my left index finger & so I bought sizes 6,7,8 . This product works wonderfully. It s unbelievably comfortable & is very easy to use, you just slip it on & there is lettering on the back of the ring so you can tell which way to wear the ring. The problem with this product is the lack of flexible buying considering the sizes. I bought the pack size 6,7,8 but really I ll only be able to use the size 6 ring. I wish I had the freedom to have been able to buy sizes 4,5,6 or even 5,5,6,6. That s my only problem with this product. Otherwise it s fantastic. It totally blew my expectations. Great product!!! Thank you very much!! 4Love/Hate these but they do what they say .... Get multiple sizes and types ...____ No medical advice is being presented here. Consult a doctor for medical advice. My experience quick summary is:- If you have Mallet Finger, educate yourself on how to treat the injury including how to remove the splint during the healing process.- There is both art and science at play here. The art part implies that you need to adapt as needed for your recovery, use and comfort.- Don't error on the small size when selecting a size. Small cannot be made bigger. Bigger can be padded (made smaller) to improve fit.- What is comfortable on one day (or time of day) may be irritating on another- Get a couple sizes so that you can fit to that time's needs- Padding the finger (pressure points) may help- Don't assume the taper will provide additional sizing options without irritation/pain- Consider getting alternate splints to relieve irritation at various points of the finger.- Tape when planning a more active day especially if using a size slightly large. Here is my story:I gave it a 4 star but I have a love hate relationship with these. Love that they are less bulky, are easier to wash, keep the skin healthier than the cast and seem to work. Hate because they are not as comfortable as needed. 4 stars because of the irritation on the top of my finger. After 4 weeks in a cast for Mallet Finger I took the cast off and used the Oval-8 (keeping finger straight during transition). I took the cast off because it irritated the DIP top joint, the sides and the tip. Plus it was clumsy, a pain to keep dry while washing ... and it was getting stinky. The Oval-8 is a lot easier to use when washing and allows you to keep the finger's skin healthier than the cast.I originally bought a 5 based on measurements ( I used the opposite good finger as a guide. The 5 is too small for either hand's finger). Then I bought the 6-7-8. Depending on the day I wear a 6 or 7. Some days/nights I wish that the 8 fit better. Note that as they get larger in diameter, they get longer and the 8 interferes with my finger's PIP jointWhat I wear depends on how swollen/sensitive my finger is at that time. Sometimes (a function of use, salt intake, fluid level, swelling, temperature, moon phase, other?) my finger is larger than others. Sometimes these are so tight that it hurts my finger's top and tip. Both the Oval-8 and the cast irritate my finger's DIP joint top, and tip's bottom and side. I sometimes use thicker medical tape to provide some padding to the top of my DIP joint which sorta works. They are slightly tapered on top supposedly so that it provides a "half size" but I find the taper, when going against the taper of my finger, is irritating. So that "feature" doesn't work for me.I am waiting for the other style splint to arrive (like shown here ... Mallet Finger Injury Pain Splint DIP Joint Support Brace Protection Size L). I think they are also known as Stax style splints. My thought is to alternate use to give my finger Oval-8 pressure points some relief. For example, wear the Stax style at night and the Oval-8 during the day.I did have the Oval-8 slip off once while doing household chores. Since then I use some tape to prevent it coming off. I don't use tape all the time, only as needed. 4Buy this now! It REALLY works! No BS! Thank you Oval-8If you have trigger finger, YOU NEED THIS! Buy it! I wear the 12 and the 11, the 12 for when I'm more active to allow my finger to bend enough to complete simple daily tasks, I even use it when I play pool, works great! But what you really want to know is, does it help the condition, and the answer is yes! I was a week away from surgery when I found this and now I don't think I will need to get it, if you wear it most of the time, it WILL help alleviate the failure to open you finger, and reduces the inflammation on the knuckle joint. Mine was so bad it wouldn't open on its own and was very painful, but now it's as close to normal as I believe it can get and I'm happy for it. You can even wash your hands while wearing it! This is a truly awesome product and I'm grateful to have found it. I have medium sized hands to large, get the 10,11,12 set if you wear a large winter glove and these should fit you, assuming the finger you have the trigger finger in is your ring finger like mine, they are even reversible so you can wear it tighter or a bit looser depending on your activity, also if you have this condition, 1) stop using tools, i.e. Garden tools, hedge trimmers and all other tools that put pressure on the palm of the hands, that's is when mine emerged, after a long summer of yard work, just realize you have a condition now and hire someone to do the yard work from now on. and 2) try not to use hot water when washing your hands, these things are important because you need to rest your hand to give this product a chance to help you. In about a month, you should notice a big difference in the condition. On a side note, you probably have an autoimmune disease, that's what initially causes the tightness that allows the tendons and tissue to become tight and susceptible to being damaged by tools in the first place. 5Its ok for Trigger thumb, not a great fit, would be better for other fingersI needed this for Trigger thumb. I had been wearing a big ace bandage type of splint thing but wanted something smaller and washable. The pain in the thumb is on the base. The splint hits it at that spot and is sore. I spun the splint around a bit so it doesn't hit that spot, but the size 9 is too tight, the size 10 slips off. I measured my thumb joint and it measured as a size 8 at exactly 2.5 inches..good thing I bought the 3 pack as the size 8 doesn't fit at all. I needed to secure this with a piece of exercise stretch tape. I'm not sure how I feel about it at this point as the size isn't quite great for my weird sized thumb. (You can wear each splint different ways, upside down, etc...tried it all).It does however prevent the thumb from bending, which is the point. Its well made, heavy duty piece of plastic, not flexible, you wont break it. For other fingers this would be a much better fit. If you have Trigger thumb get the soft sided thumb splints instead for better comfort. I think I'll switch between this plastic and the soft side. I wanted something I could wash my hands with as I work in a school which is a germ fest! :) You can get the Kinesiology tape wet so..I'll see how it goes. Not exactly what I wanted..but beats surgery! :) 3Get's LOST EASILY. Hang onto your DOO DAD! $$$ !!!Hmm...flesh colored huh? Well, that's a great choice all the way around. Any other color would DEFINITELY wind up in the trash if someone picks it up off the floor! It's perfectly inconspicuous in flesh! Mine falls off when I dry my hands or I'm putting packages in the car, but I m wearing it on my first joint of my middle finger and I need to be able to pull it off for work, so I take the risk of losing it. It has helped the swelling in my finger go down.I have very large hands for a woman. Maybe my ring finger is an 8. I don't know. I don't wear rings. I didn't feel like measuring but I was pretty sure I could order the 6 7 8. I was right. I started with the 8 because my MIDDLE finger (larger than a ring finger) was so swollen on my right hand. It fell off within 4 minutes doing some activity. I pushed the size 7 on on over my painful knuckle. I had better luck with this. When I took it off, I lost it for a long time. Found it. Lost it. Found it. PUt it back on and my finger really quieted down using this apparatus. I still don't know what is wrong with it. It's not arthritis. It's not broken but I hurt it. Now that it is almost a normal size, I still think I'll stick with wearing the 7. It won't be as snug and I'll probably lose it again but the 6 might reirritate my knuckle. Thankful for these. I wish they weren't soooo expensive. That kind of seems unfair. When I get my 3D printer, I'm going to print me some unless their price comes down. 4THRILLED!!! They really workI couldn't be happier. I have a mallet pinky finger. The sizing is way off but I got lucky. I bought the pack of 2,3,4. I measured a 2 but the 4 fits. I'm now on the smaller size of 4. (each device has 2 sizes built in). My next level will be the large side on the 3. I really don't see how the 2 will ever fit! Lol. But they are really working. My finger is slowly straightening and I have full function. I don't cringe from pain when someone touches my finger. Also it helped to add a little Vaseline to my finger to slip it on plus remember you can turn it and wear sidewase to find the "magic" position. I wear mine sideways and it's perfect. Play with it! 5
