better than having nothing in your earsUPDATE 7/12/18:i figured out a way to make these fit perfectly for my ears. cut off the first flange of the silicon tip (see my photo). with the second (middle) flange as the tip, it makes a perfect seal now without any effort. unless you're a child or have unusually small ear holes, the first flange is too small to make a seal, so naturally it gets pushed deeper into the ear canal which may cause discomfort.Original review:i bought these mainly to wear at movie theaters, where audio systems have gotten unbearably loud over the years. the hearos work as expected, although i wouldn't mind if they blocked a little more. they have a noise reduction rating of 12 db (decibels). there's a little more attenuation on the high end (treble) of the frequency range than the low end (bass). i don't see any holes in the plastic end cap part, so i assume sound waves just pass through it to reach the inner stem part (not sure how it all works, but yay science).in regards to how they fit, they actually don't go in horizontally into my ear canal as shown in their diagram (second image). they fit better if the stem points downward like at a 45 degree angle. also the included case is made out of the same flimsy plastic material as the product packaging, so nothing fancy there. 4Better than foam earplugs!The first time I ordered this, the earplugs were nowhere to be seen in the packaging. Amazon was quick to help, but UPS misdelivered the replacement package. Finally, the third time around, I got exactly what I was hoping for! Having never used "high-fidelity" earplugs before, I didn't quite know what to expect. I was surprised when I put them in that I didn't really realize they were there. Everything sounds as clear as it should, but quieter. Not muffled, just less loud.It seems to do a good job at attenuating all of the frequencies evenly, but I suppose my ears may not be as trained as some. Still, it's a world of difference compared to ordinary foam earplugs. When you wear these, you can't hear the blood rushing through your head. Instead, there's actual silence!I mostly use them for yard work, and sometimes I wear them at night when I'm somewhere noisy. They sound good when playing/listening to the piano, but I can't speak for a whole band or orchestra.Finally, I'm pleased that they are easy to wash. A little bit of soap and water takes any residual earwax right off. If I manage to lose this pair, I'll be happy to purchase these again. 5Earplugs that evenly plug sound but have some drawbacksThey do a pretty good job at blocking noise and having a flat EQ for $14. Definitely sound better than the foam types. However, I am afraid to wear these to concerts because they are pretty vulnerable to getting smashed into your ear. Hasn't happened to me, but I can easily see how they would.I am also a lightweight 6ft male and these are a bit big for my ears, a little uncomfortable after more than an hour. I will buy another pair of these undoubtedly, but get a smaller pair. However if you have the cash, get custom molded plugs, they will work better for longer. 4Came apart. Disappointing from a brand I've recommended in the past.Pros:I've used Hearos for years. I sing in a 10 piece horn band. Our practice space is small and my first pair of Hearos made a huge difference in my ability to hear all the instruments without being overwhelmed. I only use one in my right ear, the left hear is for my monitor ear piece. After three years, my original pair no longer fit snugly. Time for a replacement.Cons:The first pair of Hearos I got two weeks ago seemed fine. Went in ok and worked as expected. At the end of practice I reached to take the plug out and felt something sharp. It was the point of the stem I was feeling. The end cap had fallen off. I found it on the floor next to me. My original pair were very sturdy so I figured it was just a fluke.I contacted Amazon and they sent out a new pair immediately even before I returned the defective ones.I got the new ones last week but only used them last night. The clear stem cover/handles were even loser than before. Neither of the plugs were usable(pictured). The cap/handles are so loose that they'd come off with a semi-vigorous shake.Additionally, on the Hearos web site they show the curved, translucent case and highlight the new design as an improvement on the old boxy clear case. Both sets I recently got were shipped with the old clear case which is really awkward to keep in a pocket.I've left a message on the Hearos support page and hope to hear from them soon.I don't know if these are old left over items with bad glue or a sudden failure of quality control, but I will not buy them again. I haven't tried initiate the second return yet. I hope Amazon doesn't give me any trouble. 1I loved these in the past. Current inventory is uselessI've been buying these for years. Probably 10 pairs in all. This most recent pair is completely unusable and I am returning them. The hard plastic tips that are grabbed when removing them from your ears slide off easily.Furthermore, this most recent iteration no longer has a nice travel case. At one point in time, there was a nice pill shaped case. At another time, there was a nice hard rectangular case. Now, there is a joke of a thin plastic case. Is this an unfortunate instance of the accountants thinking they would save 10 cents on a product with an already huge margin? I see no other explanation.I am ordering a replacement and I'll reuse an old case that outlived the product. Hopefully I had a one-off defective product.EDIT: I just received my replacement order. These are also completely unusable. I am lowering from 3 stars to 1 star. Again, I have owned several pairs of these. I know how they work. These 100% will not function properly. This inventory should be completely destroyed if it is all like this. 1Rebranded Etymotic ER20 Plugs at a Great Price! Highly RecommendedThese Hearos "High Fidelity" earplugs are really the popular Etymotic Research ER20 plugs rebranded in a different package. In fact, they are also the same as the Mack's brand "Hear Plugs High Fidelity" model (I own them all). For whatever reason, both of the rebranded versions cost less than the "Etymotic" branded ones despite being exactly the same, but I'm not complaining!Over the past year, I have tried more than a dozen different models of ear plugs claiming to be either "flat attenuation", "natural sounding" or "high fidelity" with some costing upwards of $50 per pair! Needless to say, these Etymotic/Mack's/Hearos plugs are hands-down the best plug for the price if you are looking for a true "high fidelity" ear plug that will reduce the volume of your surroundings an appreciable amount without causing voices and music to become overly softened, muddled or inaudible.In fact, there's nothing at 2x or even 3x the price that exceeds the performance of these plugs and many similar designs, such as the popular "Vader" plugs, simply fall short in real world use.The NRR (noise reduction rating) of these plugs is rated at just 12db, so I DO NOT recommend them for use in shooting sports or high noise work environments. However, for short-term use in moderately loud environments, such as busy restaurants, parties, music concerts and band practices, these are an exceptional choice! In reality, the effective noise reduction of these plugs is closer to 20db at some frequencies, but it's always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your ears, so get a plug with a higher NRR rating if you are going to be exposed to loud noises for more than a couple hours at a time.My only complaint is that the stem on this design sticks out a bit farther than I would prefer. However, the clear color does help conceal it and this is only an aesthetic preference, not a functional one. In use, the longer stem makes the plugs easier to hold, fit and remove than some other styles, particularly the Planet Waves "Pacato" earplugs and HearDefenders-DF models.The triple-layer, mushroom-shaped baffle system is a classic design, but continues to offer the widest range of fitment and offers a good quality seal in most ears with average size canals.All in all, these are a high quality ear plug that deliver exactly what they say...high fidelity sound with solid protection!Highly recommended.If you found my review helpful, please tell Amazon by clicking the "YES" button below. I went to shows without earplugs and would come home with ringing ears, which is a sign of a good show, right? Then I realized that hearing damage can be cumulative... I looked around on Amazon and these had excellent reviews so I bought them. I can hear the music just as well as without earplugs and I personally like the tiny rods as it makes them easier to take out than the soft kind that mold to your ear canal. They come with a little case that occasionally pops open, but is super handy to keep stashed in my purse so they're always on hand! 5Used them for years, work greatI play music on a semi professional basis and I have used these Hearos for many years on stage during every performance, weekly more or less.... They bring everything down evenly...the fidelity is still there, it just cuts off all the harshness of drums, the snare, and the guitars, especially if the amp is pointed at your head...the triple flange is nice, you can have them all the way in for ultra noisy situations. .. or have them partially out and you can still have a regular conversation with them still in. I sing in the band, too and these do not hinder that in any way. I have four sets just to make I always have a pair...sometimes after a gig they go into my pocket and then on to the counter and I have forgotten them for shows. ... my hearing is precious to me, so I have the extra pairs tucked away in my gig bag or instrument case. They are comfortable enough, I sometimes I forget I'm still wearing them. 5Helps with MisophoniaSpeaking on behalf of my daughter who has misophonia... This is a life-saver as she runs out of coping stamina if she doesn't have something like this throughout the day. With these she's able to hear regular conversations and it cuts down on the noise that triggers her misophonia. This is probably not what the standard customer uses them for but it has helped us with her situation. As a result she is less stressed, happier, more productive, and more pleasant to be around, while wearing them. Obviously results will vary, but we're very happy with them as they allow her to avoid (now unneeded) medications and their side-effects. I am not a doctor, please don't use my observations as medical advice. Great product, I'm glad it's around for situations like ours. 5Exactly what I was looking for!My niece purchased a pair of these for when she goes to concerts and highly recommended them, so my husband and I both ordered a pair as we go to quite a few heavy metal concerts and were hoping to wake up the next morning without the ringing in our ears. They come with a plastic case to put them in, nothing too durable but good enough for our use. We each put ours in our pockets and when we got to the concert we put them in. They were comfortable and did a great job of blocking out the background noise, which in turn enhanced the music and made it much easier to hear. I was worried they would stick out to far, from some other reviews I read, but I didn't have any issues. I even had a hoodie pulled over my head through the whole concert due to rain and didn't find that they caused any issues. They didn't fall out easily and didn't get caught on my hoodie causing ear pain. Highly recommended. 5
